IN THESE volatile modern times it’s normally presidents dodging the bullets but at Nambucca Heads Island Golf Course on Saturday the tables were turned.
Peter Klem-Goode was as ever minding his own business – on the 5th tee – when his golf bag like a Secret Service agent took the slug as Club President Geoff Harris on the 4th blocked his approach and somehow lost his voice and the number after three wasn’t hollered.
All ended amicably as Harris hurtled over to apologise and hands were shook not thrown.
Klem-Goode was still rattled though as he strolled down the middle of 14 only to see Harris on the 13th tee. In an abundance of caution, Klem-Goode duly jinked hard left to the sanctuary of the mangroves.

Only eight players ventured out on Thursday 14 May and it was 10-marker Flanders to the fore with 39 points in the Marcel Towers medley stableford.
His sweet round of 76 off the stick included 10 pars and a birdie on the 17th where the main green is back, baby.
Nagging showers saw a small field in the women’s Monthly Medal on Wednesday 13 May, which doubled as the third round of the Golf NSW Medal eclectic.
Thea Kimber (23 handicap) found top gear for the victory with 71 nett, carding four pars and 94 off the stick to also collect the Div 1 Medal.
Judith Boyle (29) had 106 shots to win the Div 2 Medal and Jennifer Ainsworth (33) had 109 for the Medal in Div 3.
Boyle parred the tricky 7th and Ainsworth the 3rd and 5th before an unspeakable moose encounter on the 11th.
Flag-botherers were Ainsworth on 5, Kimber (no surprise) on 13 and Henny Oldenhove banked a lobster on the last.
The Mid North Coast Veterans single stableford at The Island on Tuesday 12 May saw players from Nambucca, South West Rocks, Coffs Harbour, Bellingen, Sawtell, Bowraville, Urunga, Macksville, Port Macquarie, Dorrigo RSL, Woolgoolga and Scotchman’s Creek in Victoria.
Once-was-Nambucca Nev Newman (9) from The Rocks carded 40 points for the W in Div 1 to head home three players on 37 points – Matthew Lark (11, Coffs), Ken Klem (10, Nambucca) and John Greensill (19, Bellingen).
Gary Rumble (26, Nambucca) had 37 points to salute in Div 2 on a countback from clubmate Craig Riddington (25). Sawtell’s Glenys Boventi (27) was third with 35 points, one ahead of Alan Martin (21).
Men with two balls each (always reassuring) after winning the pins were David Nicholls on 5, Ross Donnelly on 13 and Riddington on 8 and 18.
Catchya on The Island where the hardworking greens team of two plus volunteers have the fairways with a slightly higher cut looking sweeter than Augusta. And if you’re in the rough – shoosh – operator error and be thankful the longer grass stopped your ball from finding deeper strife.
