STEVE Frost tends to be more thereabouts than there but the stage was his alone in the men’s Monthly Medal at the Nambucca Heads Island Golf Course on Saturday.
The quietly spoken 15-marker eschews the spotlight like a Transylvanian Count but there was no hiding as he staked his claim with 67 nett to win the B Grade medal in a stroke round presented by Nambucca Liquor.
Playing partner Colin Wormleaton wanted Frost inducted into the sandbaggers club (SC), but the latter was having none of that and reluctantly posed for the winner’s shot in the clubhouse, fearing he’d be run down by the late starters still toiling on the turf.
Frost’s 82 off the stick, including birdies on 13 and 18, proved enough, one clear of runner-up Stephen Kimber (18 handicap) on 68 nett.

Maxine Townsend (18) secured the gross with 89.
In Div 1, Daryl Wall (10 – surely eligible to join Wormo in the SC) – found top gear with 75 off the stick and 65 nett to claim the A Grade medal, three better than Club Champion Graham Watson (6). Michael Jolly (4) took the gross with 77.
Yamba’s Stuart Bell (21) carded 68 nett for the W in C Grade, one clear of Trevor Hopkins (22). Kevin Wilson (22) had 91 off the bat for the gross prize.
Dave Rosser looks to smack one up the shute on the par four 17th at The Island.
Having 10 or more shots on a single hole at Nambucca is oft described as a ‘Moose’ and is celebrated by playing partners with hand gestures, high-pitched bellowing and disconcertingly, rutting movements.
The Stag Appreciation Society on Saturday was a large club including Rodney Ford, Bruce Wilson, Paul McElhinney, Keith Elphick, Ben Venner, Dan Wren and Grant Ellis. Spare a thought for those who felt the velvet on par threes – John Fortescue a 12 on the 5th, Robert Reid a 10 on the 7th and Ross Morpuss, also a 10, on the 18th.
Stuart Bell snaked the longest putt on the 1st for the Ecomist prize pack and pins went to Dan Wassens on 5, Ben Venner on 7, Philip Frost on 8 (96cm), Geoff McCann on 13 (75cm) for the Pizza This Pizza That voucher and Stephen Doherty on the last (100cm) for the $60 Pro Pin.
Michael Summerill turned two better around the front at Nambucca Heads before fading lamentably around the back.
Nambucca Valley Care Group sponsored the stableford on Thursday 10 September when Geoffrey Poole (30) had the hottest score of the day with 30 points to win Div 3 by one from Noel Gaddes (31).
Poole came out of the blocks faster than office workers grabbing Tim Tams at a complimentary morning tea, with a bird on the second and pars on 5, 7 and 9.
In Div 1, Bryce McCarroll (4) edged Graham Watson (6) on countback with 36 points while Paul Ryan (16) performed likewise in Div 2, taking the win from Daniel McInerney (19) also after a count of the cards after both finished on 36 points.
John Starr navigated the longest putt on 1, and flag pests were Stephen McNeil on 5, Steve Frost on 7, Loren Bald on 8 and Neil Duffus on 15. Geoff Brooks boxed the gourmet pizza on 13 and Dan Wren laughed last with the $80 Pro Pin on 18.
It was a single stableford and Top 10 qualifier for the women on Wednesday 9 September when Dianne O’Leary (16) claimed Div 1 with 39 points while Sue Seymour (28) wowed with 42 points to sweep Div 2.
Seymour was one under par through the last four holes. Mull that.
Pins on the 5th went to Thea Kimber and Judith Boyle and Martine Murray on the 13th.
Dennis Ashton generously sponsored the Island Sunday event and had a share in the spoils after partnering with Robyn Jones as they finished runners-up in the Fourball Best Ball on 13 September.
Shayne and Gary Scott were even stronger, with a stonking 49 points for the gold.
Jan Harris and Thomas Wattison took the pins on 5, Ashton on 13 for the pizza, and Elizabeth Hobday and Les Greenup on the 18th.
The Mid North Coast Vets infiltrated The Island on Tuesday 8 September when Coffs Harbour’s John Jones (10) won Div 1 with 36 points, Bellingen’s Ruth Hall (16) smoked Div 2 on 41 and Macksville’s Eric Wise returned 37 for the Div 3 glory.
